Comment éviter de perdre son chat ?

Si vous décidez de laisser votre chat sortir, il faut observer plusieurs règles pour éviter de le perdre :

  1. tout d’abord, assurez-vous que le voisinage est SÉCURITAIRE pour votre chat (pas de grandes avenues, pas de voisins qui ne tolèrent pas les chats dans leur jardin ou sur leur terrasse, etc.). Si ce n'est pas le cas, achetez-lui un harnais;
  2. sortez-le attaché et TOUJOURS en votre compagnie (sinon il risque de s'étrangler avec la laisse du harnais);
  3. mettez-lui TOUJOURS un COLLIER AVEC SA MÉDAILLE de vaccination, sur laquelle vous pouvez GRAVER votre numéro de téléphone ainsi que la rue où vous habitez (ex. : rue X, angle rue Y) : cela permet aux personnes qui le trouveraient de savoir s'il est effectivement perdu (loin de chez vous) ou s'il est simplement sorti. Cela évitera aussi que quelqu'un ne vous le prenne, croyant que c'est un chat errant;
  4. ne laissez pas sortir votre chat TROP JEUNE;
  5. ne LAISSEZ JAMAIS SORTIR UN CHAT NON VACCINÉ car il pourrait attraper facilement plusieurs maladies qui pourraient lui être FATALES;
  6. accompagnez-le lors de ses premières sorties sur le balcon, puis dans la cour. Ne le laissez pas trop longtemps les premiers temps;
  7. ne LAISSEZ JAMAIS SORTIR un chat NON CASTRÉ ou une chatte NON OPÉRÉE. Il pourrait alors fuguer (SUR PLUSIEURS KILOMÈTRES!), se bagarrer et risquer toutes sortes de maladies, dont le SIDA DU CHAT (FIV) pour lequel il n'y ni vaccin ni remède. SANS OUBLIER QUE LES CHATS SE REPRODUISENT TRÈS RAPIDEMENT ET SONT CONDAMNÉS À MOURIR DE MALADIES, DE FAIM ET DE FROID. C'est un DEVOIR DE CITOYEN DE FAIRE STÉRILISER SON ANIMAL! (Sauf si on est éleveur enregistré!);
  8. ne laissez pas sortir votre chat juste après un DÉMÉNAGEMENT. Il faut qu'il s'habitue à sa nouvelle maison pendant plusieurs semaines, sinon il risque très facilement de ne plus se retrouver. NE LE LAISSEZ PAS SORTIR LA NUIT, même s’il aime ça. En général, les chats qui sont perdus ont été laissés à l'extérieur la nuit. Comme il y a peu de circulation automobile, les chats s'aventurent plus loin et ne peuvent pas rentrer chez eux lorsque le jour arrive. Pour être sûr que votre chat rentre à l'heure que vous décidez (en début de soirée est l'idéal), donnez-lui de la nourriture toujours à cette heure (un peu de nourriture humide pour les chats qui mangent de la nourriture sèche la journée ou encore des petites friandises). Un chat est réglé comme une horloge pour se nourrir. Il se fera très rapidement aux habitudes que vous choisirez;
  9. si votre chat est dégriffé, il est préférable de ne pas le laisser sortir. Il ne pourra pas grimper pour échapper à un danger. Il ne sera pas à égalité avec un autre chat s'il y a affrontement : il ne pourra tout simplement pas se défendre et mordra (d'où le très haut risque de maladies). Il ne faut pas oublier que le chat est un animal territorial, il va rencontrer ses semblables et risque fort de se bagarrer avec eux pour avoir "le droit" de partager la ruelle;
  10. si vous transportez votre chat avec vous lors de déplacements, mettez-lui TOUJOURS SON COLLIER D’IDENTIFICATION;
  11. l'été est fini ? Prenez garde aux piscines!! Malheureusement, tous les automnes, les piscines font des victimes. En essayant d'y boire, certains chats tombent dans la piscine et, incapables de remonter sur le bord ou de nager bien longtemps, ils périssent noyés. Si votre chat va dehors, vérifiez que votre piscine ou celle de vos voisins est correctement bâchée.

 

Que faire si votre animal est perdu ?

  1. Nattendez pas plusieurs jours, vous connaissez votre chat et si ce n'est pas dans ses habitude, c'est qu'il lui est arrivé quelque chose.
  2. Ayez toujours une photo récente que vous pourrez imprimer et afficher dans votre quartier : poteaux, ruelles, vétérinaires, dépanneurs, épiceries, magasins d'aliments pour animaux, sites internet (voir la rubrique « liens » sur notre site), annonces dans les journaux. Laissez sa description à tous les vétérinaires des environs.
  3. Contactez Nous ! Contactez la SPCA, le Berger blanc ou les autres organismes de votre région. Rappelez-les tous les jours. Il faut savoir que si votre animal est apporté à l’un de ces organismes, il sera euthanasié dans les trois à cinq jours qui suivront à moins qu’il ne s'agisse d'un chaton. Et encore, cela dépend de la période de l'année.
  4. Il arrive souvent que les chats, animaux curieux par définition, s'aventurent dans des endroits comme les sous-sols de vos voisins, les garages, les trous, etc. Ils se retrouvent alors enfermés ou bloqués dans leur cachette. Ils peuvent aussi suivre un autre chat et parcourir de longues distances. Allez à sa recherche dans votre quartier avec ses gâteries préférées, TÔT LE MATIN (à l'aube), vous pourrez ainsi l'entendre miauler s'il est coincé quelque part.

How can you avoid to lose your cat ?

If you decide to let your cat go outside, it is better to follow a few safety rules in order not to lose him :

  1. first of all, make sure your neighbourhood is SAFE for a cat (no big avenues, no neighbour who will hate to see your cat in his garden or on his balcony…). If it is not the case, buy him a cat harness;
  2. always tether him when outside and NEVER leave him alone (he could choke himself with the harness’s leash);
  3. always make him wear a cat collar with a vaccination medal. You can inscribe your phone number and the name of the street where you live (i.e. : street X, corner Y), it will allow people who would find him to know if he is really lost (far from your home) or just out for a walk. It will also avoid him to be taken by someone who thinks he is a street cat;
  4. do not let your cat go outside if he is VERY YOUNG;
  5. NEVER LET A NON VACCINATED CAT GO OUTSIDE because he could easily get a LETHAL illness;
  6. go with him on his first outings on the balcony, then in the yard. Do not leave him for too long the first times;
  7. NEVER LET A NON NEUTERED CAT OUTSIDE. He could run off (SEVERAL MILES AWAY), get in a fight and risk several diseases among them the feline aids (FIV) which cannot be prevented nor cured. And do not forget that cats breed very quickly and end dead from sickness, hunger and cold. It is a citizen’s duty to have your cat neutered! (Unless you are a registered breeder!);
  8. do not let your cat go outside shortly after a house moving. He must get used to his new home during a few weeks. Otherwise, he may not find his way back. Even if he loves it, DO NOT LET HIM GO OUTSIDE DURING THE NIGHT. Lost cats have very often been left outside at night. Cats will go farther at night because there are fewer cars, and when morning comes, they are not able to get back home. If you want to make sure your cat is going to come back when you decide it (early evening is the best time), always give him food at this same time (a bit of moist food for dry food eaters or a cat delicacy). A cat is as regular as a clockwork and he will quickly get used to the eating habits you will set;
  9. if your cat’s claws have been removed, it is better not to let him go outside. He will not be able to climb to avoid a danger. He will not be on an equal footing (pawing ?) with another cat in case of a clash : he will simply not be able to protect himself and will bite (which explains the high sickness risk). Do not forget that cats are very territorial animals, your cat will meet other cats and will probably get in a fight with them in order to be entitled to share the backstreet;
  10. if you take your cat with you when you travel, always PUT HIM HIS IDENTIFICATION CAT COLLAR;
  11. When summers ends, be careful with swimming pools!! Unfortunately, swimming pools kill cats every year: they try to drink in it and slip. They are not able to climb back afterwards or to swim for a long time and they drown. If your cat goes outside, make sure your swimming pool and your neighbour’s are well covered with tarpaulin.

 

What can you do if your cat is lost ?

  1. Do not wait for days before reacting. You know your cat and if he is not used to do that it means something happened to him.
  2. Always have a recent photo from your cat so that you can print it and post it up in your neighbourhood : posts, backstreets, veterinaries, stores, pet shops, on the Web (see “links” on our website), in the newspapers (classified adverts). Leave his description to the veterinaries in your vicinity.
  3. Get in touch with us! Get in touch with the SPCA, the Berger Blanc and all the organizations in your area. Call every day. You must know that if your cat is found, he will be put to death in the next three to five days. If he is a kitten, they may keep him a bit longer but it depends on the time of the year.
  4. It very often happens that cats, who are naturally curious, venture in neighbour’s basements or garages, holes, etc. They may be locked in or trapped in their hiding place. They may also follow another cat and walk far away. Look for him in your neighbourhood with his favourite treat EARLY IN THE MORNING, you then will be able to hear him if he is trapped somewhere.
